Humpback Whales are still in Hawaii

A warm aloha to all our Hawaii visitors,
Happy to hear that you like your new Hawaiian T-shirt from Crazy Shirt and even bought several Hawaiian shirts for family and friends as an aloha gift from Hawaii. Believe me they will the shirts. Maybe you even bought a shirt with a Hawaiian humpback whale - or should I better say Alaskan humpback whale - on it, which is a favorite theme for T-shirt makes in Hawaii. Especially the kids love those.

What better experience is there to see the gentle ocean giants, not just on a Tshirt, but in true nature on a Hawaii vacation! It's amazing how many Humpback whales we spot recently and it's already middle of March, time to go home to their Alaskan cold waters. I have a feeling they are gathering for getting ready for their big journey home.

If you have never seen the Imax movie 'Whales', which includes the many dangerous encounters Humpback whales with their new babies are facing on this long trip from Hawaii to Alaska, do it next time you are near an Imax movie. It's a whale experience I will never forget.

Yes, the Humpback whales are everywhere around the Hawaiian islands at the moment. Beach visitors don't just pack towels, beach chairs and sun screen these days but a pair of binoculars belongs to beach equipment in Hawaii for many people as well. It's a funny thing to watch: as soon as one lifts his binoculars, everybody follows with pointing and screaming. Beach visitors get totally excited when seeing a pod of whales or 'just' a whale mama with her newborn calf.

The Humpback whales seem to enjoy the warm Hawaiian ocean waters just as we humans do. It's so much fun to watch the Humpback whales to splash their fluke, blow theirs spouts or even do a breach, the ultimate joy for us people, and I guess for the whales too. If we only could manage to get a photos of the whales! We bought a new fancier digital camera in order to catch more Hawaii photos for our Best Hawaii Vacation blog visitors, according to the motto 'A photo speaks a thousand words'.

But I tell you it's so hard to take a photo of a Humpback whale because you never have the camera ready when they suddenly start performing their 'magic tricks'. I admire everybody who has taken a decent Humpback whale photo from shore. I guess from a whale watch boat is somewhat easier but I have to admit I don't go on boats as I get terrible seasick. Well, if your belong to the lucky Hawaii vosotors or residents who have a great Humpback whale photo. please, share with our Hawaii blog visitors.
Mahalo for your photo and comment. Aloha Pua Hawaii Vacations
    p.s.
I can't believe my luck when I searched youtube for Humpback whale videos 2009 and found the one above from Paul Hugel Humpback Whales from The Frogman 2 charter boat in Maalaea Maui. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Mahalo Paul!

I was also totally captivated by the this story 'Whale watchers witness possible birth in Kohala' which was published yesterday in West Hawaii Today. Several Big Island residents claim they have witnessed a humpback whale give birth Tuesday morning! A Humpback whale story worthwhile reading!

More Encounters with Humpback Whales In Hawaii

After we published Keoki's story about his encounter with a humpback whale mama and her baby in Hawaii, which had happened many years ago, we came across some more exciting humpback whale close encounters and incredible photos. Let's share with our blog visitors what we've found.

Evelyn from Homespun Honolulu blog chose the whale motif as her theme for her '6th Carnival of Aloha' of Hawaii Blogs. Please, drop by and pay these blogs of our Hawaii blog ohana (family) a visit. You will be amazed by the huge variety of Hawaii themes and stories blog owners talked about plus by the incredible humpback whale photo.

Prize winning Humpback Whale photo by Lori MazzucaWhen I saw that photo my immediate thought was "This should have won a prize by National Geographic!". Well, pursuing the links back Evelyn provided for her humpback whale photo, I just found out that this exciting and unusual photo was shot by Lori Mazzuca on Kauai and won first place 'Mammals - Professional, National Wildlife Awards' by Smithonian Institute! Truly, well deserved! Here is what Lori Mazzuca, the photographer, said about her prize winning photo:

"I was observing a strange interaction between a pair of bottlenose dolphins and a humpback whale, when it became apparent that the two species were collaborating in some way. The dolphin was lying on a humpback whale’s head while it was slowly swimming along. Looking through my camera lens the stunt appeared to be orchestrated by mutual “agreement.” The whale very slowly—and vertically—lifted the dolphin into the air. I expected the dolphin to wriggle atop the humpback’s head to get off, but it just laid still and arched, trying to stay on top of the whale’s snout. In this frame the dolphin was beginning its slippery return to the sea. Once back in the ocean, the dolphin swiftly swam away with the other dolphin, leaping joyfully as if they had just scored a coup!”

This is not all for today. Sometimes the stories we come across on the Internet on blogs and posts are so complex, it makes it hard to sift through to the 'real thing'. Here is one of the most exciting blog posts we ever read on Hawaii blogs. Bobbie from the RightBlue blog posted it. We are still delighted and thankful when she shared some time ago her Hawaii diving tips with our blog visitors. If you are a diver or just interested in the abundance of tropical fish living around the Hawaiian islands, Bobbie is the one who can tell you all about them in an educational and entertaining way. Plus you don't want to miss her ocean life photos! Here is a short excerpt from her recent blog story about her 'Tales of Whales' - close encounters with humpback whales:

"On the day of our first whale encounter, we had completed the deepest part of our dive at Snapper Point, and we were coming slowly up the slope, poking lazily along, looking for shells and little critters on the rocky bank. Just like always.

We were a few meters below the level of the plateau when a shadow passed over us. We both stopped and looked up at the same moment -- just in time to see a full-grown Humpback Whale do a jackknife dive from the surface and glide down toward us. We were stunned."
    , it only gets better.

Let us hear what you think about the gentle giants of the ocean, the humpback whales. Mahalo and aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

Humpback Whale Season in Hawaii

In addition to the huge winter surf, the peak of the Humpback whale season in Hawaii is here! This is not just the moment when the whales have come to the warm waters of Hawaii to give birth in December. Now the lucky whale watchers will see the mama whales with their baby calves. I've found a wonderful photo of a humpback whale mother with her calf floating right above her on the official Hawaii Humpback whale site. Why don't you pay the site a visit to see the stunning humpback whale photo and read more about what is done to save and protect these special ocean creatures, so we and our kids will be able to enjoy watching them for many years to come. You may also find out more about what's happening during Humpback Whale Awareness Month.

Whale watching boats can be seen around all the Hawaiian Islands at all times of the day this whale season. For our Hawaii visitors, the captain of the boat can't seemingly get close enough to the whales but boats or divers are not legally allowed to approach closer than 100 yards of any humpback whale or closer than 300 yards of a humpback mother and calf. Well, there is always the question 'Does the humpback whale know that?'. To tell you the truth there are many close encounters with the gentle giants reported and whale stories told. That's what we intend to do today. Here is Keoki's own close encounter with a humpback whale mother and her baby:

"Sometimes the most astonishing things happen when you lest expect it. This experience happened to me years ago, yet I can remember it as though it was yesterday. I was working as a massage therapist at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. It was January and the whales were back from Alaska for their winter breeding season.

Myself and Jeanne, a fellow therapist, had a 2- hour break and the weather was beautiful, as it often is on the Kohala Coast, though the ocean can be a bit turbulent in winter, however today it was calm as glass and we decided to take the 2- person kayak out for a look back at the island from sea. I would say we got out about a quarter mile and had decided that was far enough. The day was absolutely gorgeous and we had seen a couple dolphins and we were about turn around and head back when we had our minds blown.

You know when something happens so fast, like instantaneously, that you just sit there and go 'WOW!' in your mind. I mean not even being able to say anything. We were just sitting there and the next instant a mother whale and her baby appeared not more than 5 meters away, although at the time it seemed much closer. My first thought was 'Holy crap! What are we going to do?', and my second was 'Just sit here and let her make the next move'.

It seemed like we sat there forever though I know it was only minutes. We just kinda stared at each other, at least that was what I was doing. How she had appeared out of the blue, I'll never know but when she decided she had seen enough of us, I swear she and her baby dove straight down causing like a vortex in the ocean threatening to take our kayak with her. It was one of the most amazing experiences!"

Did you have any close encounters with humpback whales in Hawaii? Our blog visitors would love to hear those whale stories. Mahalo and aloha, Pua and Keoki Hawaii Vacations

Whale Watch in Hawaii

Aloha to all our Best Hawaii Vacation visitors,
The lucky ones of you are enjoying their Hawaii vacations over Christmas and New Year's in Hawaii, away from the cold, the rain or even the snow. What a blessing! Enjoy each minute of it. One of the best things to do in Hawaii during the winter months is not just playing golf or snorkeling and diving in the warm Pacific Ocean. Well, you guess it right it is taking advantage of the rare opportunity of watching whales in Hawaii. Probably you already booked a Whale Watch tour for your vacation. If you did not book your whale watch in Hawaii yet, here are a few factors for your consideration and concern:

The best whale watch operators will put the whales first. What training has the crew and how do they take part in whale research? What type of boat is it? Supposedly the catamarans are the more stable ones for whale watch. Ask the companies whether the boat carries hydrophones. To listen to whales sing will be an experience of a lifetime! Make sure that you know what's included in the price for the whale watch and how long you will be out on the ocean.

And for all those Hawaii visitors, who don't join a whale watch tour, there is no reason for regrets. You will see them everywhere along the Hawaiian coasts, closer or farther out. Mostly when you at least expect them. Best advice: always have your binoculars ready in your car. Don't just drive along the ocean without paying attention. The whales are there. Just be a little patient. Also watch your fellow travelers. When everybody suddenly gets out of their car and points at the ocean, then it's time to do the same. The encounter of those giant humpback whales in Hawaii will lift your spirits, and those special moments will stay with you for ever!

    Surfing with Whales in Hawaii!

Here are a few whale watch tours which I put together for our Hawaii visitors for the different islands:

Maui is a great island to watch whales

Maui is a great place to see humpback whales in their natural breeding area in Hawaii. During the months of December till May the humpback whales make their home in the waters surrounding Hawaiian Islands. The whales migrate close to 3,500 miles from their Alaskan summer feeding waters, to the warm waters of Hawaii where they mate and have their calves. Whale Watch Maui offers cruises four times a day from Lahaina Harbor, where the wind and the seas are calm. On Maui's Best Whale Watching Guide, Maui visitors can find various Whale watch tours from different Maui locations and decide what is the best for them, according to the Maui location and whale watch rates.

Spectacular Hawaii Whale Watching Tours On Oahu

North Shore Catamaran Charters offers great whale watch, in addition to Sunset Cruises and Snorkel boat trips, for Oahu visitors. Observe the giant Humpback whales of Hawaii as you sail across the deep blue waters of the famous North Shore. It is said that the North Shore is the least crowded whale watching spot on Oahu. You can watch the whales from this quiet sailboat. Small groups for the whale watch encounter are another plus.

Hawaiian Humpback Whales on the Coasts of Kauai

Just as Maui and Oahu get visited by the Humpback whales, Kauai does too. Their eerie whale songs resonate in Hawaiian waters from December through April.Watch as the whales leap into the air (breech) or slap their tails on the water, teach their calves to breach and explore their underwater world. The highlight of any vacation on Kauai during the winter months is a whale watch tour like with Blue Dolphin Charters. In preparation for this blog post, I came across some great whale and dolphin photos off the Na Pali Coast on Kauai.

    Big Island Whale Watch

One of the most experienced captains for Whale watching on the Big Island is Captain Mc Sweeney's, located in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. A lot of our guests at our vacation cottages joined his tour in Kona, as he he is specializing in Whale Watch. Most other boat companies include whale watch tours in winter into their traditional scuba, snorkel and sunset cruises programs.

As many as 10,000 whales are expected to visit the Hawaiian Islands this winter, we would like to make you aware of a great organization, dedicated to the whales in Hawaii. Learn more about the Hawaiian Humpback whales and the initiative taken by the Hawaiian Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary to keep the boats safe and protect these unique mammals as well.

Wishing you all your Best Vacation in Hawaii with a spectacular Whale Watch tour. Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

Thanks to our friends from youtube videos for those two great video shots in the Hawaiian waters.

West Hawaii Today - Whale Story

Looking for Humpback whales in Hawaii 'West Hawaii Today' Whale Story
What a coincidence! After we had added our post that the
'Humpback whales are back in Hawaii', we found this sad story today in West Hawaii Today's headlines. An entangled Humpback Whale was found on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island on Tuesday. As we all know Humpback whales count to the endangered species and every effort will be made to save a 40-foot humpback whale entangled in a web of fishing gear. Experts will try to free tangled humpback today.

A team of scientists and marine life experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration postponed an attempt to rescue the whale Tuesday, as they did not have local experts to free the whale. Specialists from Maui will attempt to free the whale. This is the first confirmed report of a whale entanglement in waters off the Big Island this season, said Justin Viezbicke, marine conservation coordinator for NOAA's Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. He reminded the public that humpback whales are protected under the Endangered Species Act. It is illegal to come within 100 yards of a humpback whale in Hawaiian waters without special permission from NOAA's Marine Fisheries Service. Violators face penalties up to $25,000.

Ocean Sports, a boating company based in Waikoloa Beach Resort, first spotted the adult humpback whale at 10:20 a.m. from their sailing catamaran Alala about three miles offshore of Kawaihae. Ocean Sports immediately contacted the NOAA's Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. They had also noticed that the whale was entangled in about 60 ft of fishing gear.

Read the entire story about the
entangled Humpback Whale on Hawaii Big Island. Let's hope the Maui experts will be able to free and save this 40 ft Humpback whale, so he/she can go home to Alaska with his friends soon.

The Humpback Whales are back to Hawaii!

    Aloha everybody,
Since you secured your cheap airfares to the Hawaiian Islands, it's time to deal with things to do and to see on your vacation in Hawaii.

Yes, yes, yes the humpback whales are back! You just got to find them. They frolic around all the Hawaiian Islands during the winter months. We see them mostly when we at least expect them…when we are without binoculars or digital camera! So be prepared at all times for these encounters with some of the biggest ocean living mammals when you are going island exploring on your Hawaii vacation. You don’t want to miss the picture of a lifetime of a breeching humpback whale. Nothing can compare to that!

Each winter between December and March, the humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean around the Hawaiian Islands in order to give birth to their calves and provide milk for them. After hanging out for a few months in our warm waters, they swim thousands of miles back to Alaska without eating and defending their calves on this long journey.

Good luck seeing the Humpback whales, the gentle giants!
Read more about the Humpback whales. If you want to make sure to see them close, the whale mama and her baby, sign up for a whale watch boat trip. Most Hawaii boat companies offer whale watch boat trips. Have fun watching the whales and if you have a minute, share your whale watch adventure with our Hawaii visitors here on the blog. Mahalo and aloha, Pua

For Hawaii Big Island, we recommend Dan Sweeney’s Whale watch in Kona or Kohala Coast Divers in Kawaihae for the Kohala Coast, depending on where you spend your Hawaii vacation.
